The U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is looking to designate what positions are “green” jobs.
The CMRA provided the following comments to BLS on behalf of the C&D recycling industry: “The Construction Materials Recycling Association is a national 501c3 organization that promotes the recycling of construction and demolition (C&D) materials.
As much as 600 million tons of C&D is generated in the United States every year, and as much as half of that is recycled. C&D materials are generated during the construction, renovation and demolition of buildings, roads and other structures. Recycling C&D materials reduces greenhouse gas emissions, conserves resources, conserves energy, reduces the need for landfill space, produces locally-available construction materials, and provides more jobs than a typical disposal scenario. Additionally, C&D material recycling is an important component of green building certification.
“We propose several job categories be designated as green: Mixed C&D recycling plant worker; mixed C&D recycling plant supervisor; wood grinding plant worker; wood grinding plant supervisor; concrete/ asphalt recycling plant worker; concrete/asphalt recycling plant supervisor; asphalt shingle recycling plant worker; asphalt shingle recycling plant supervisor; drywall recycling plant worker; and drywall recycling plant supervisor.”
