Finding answers to the C&D recycling industry’s issues was the goal of the board of directors of the Construction Materials Recycling Association during its recent midyear meeting in Cape Cod, Mass.
The meeting was called to order by CMRA President Jonathan Hixon, ERRCO. In attendance were CMRA Vice President John Adelman, CPRC Group; CMRA Secretary/Treasurer Valerie Montecalvo, Bayshore Recycling; Dan Costello, Costello Dismantling; Tom Roberts, Innviron; Tim Surmeier, Ag Recycling; Jay Giltz, Eagle Crusher; Tim Griffing, CBI; Mike Hammer, Waste Management; and John Yeasting, Glacier Recycling.
One move the board did take was to approve working with two insurance companies—Lockton and Apollo General—to provide insurance programs designed for the C&D recycling industry. Both companies will provide proposals and those proposals will be available for inspection on the main CMRA Web site. The new registration brochure to join the CMRA was also examined.
Another discussion centered on market developments, especially the barriers put up by some governmental agencies. Board member Dan Costello, chair of the Standards Committee, plans to spearhead a movement to gather various specifications for end markets for C&D products in order to develop some standardization within the industry, similar to other commodities, such as metals and compost. How the association can further market development was reviewed.
The U.S. EPA’s proposal to develop a national roadmap to increasing C&D recycling was covered because the CMRA is an integral part of the steering committee for the project. The goal is make sure the EPA understands that the industry needs more markets developed for its end products, and not more regulation.
Furthering the CMRA’s Award Program was a topic. Requests for nominations have been sent out and the board will provide their suggestions.
A discussion also ensued over the CMRA’s various meetings and forums. The 2010 C&D World, the CMRA’s Annual Meeting, will be held in Las Vegas at the Rio Resort and Convention Center. Initial booth sales were very strong for the event despite the slow economy. The 2011 C&D World will again be in Las Vegas, this time in conjunction with ConExpo-Con/Agg. It was reported that the CMRA-organized Shingle Recycling Forum in November 2009 is doing very well, with about 300 attendees expected. The event is co-sponsored by the Federal Highway Adminis-tration, Asphalt Roofing Manufac-turers Association, Owens-Corning, the EPA, and several others.
