Florida’s primary economic development organization has recognized Southern Waste Systems, and its sister company, CMRA member Sun Recycling, for taking a leadership role in making the state a greener place to live and do business.
Enterprise Florida, a public-private partnership, recently honored the company with the 2010 Governor’s Business Diversification Award in the category called “Green-to-Gold.”
The “Green-to-Gold” is for Florida companies, universities or other organizations that through product or process best exemplifies ‘green’ leadership as it pertains to the state’s goals to become a leader in this emerging field.
Sun Recycling is Florida’s largest independent recycler of construction and demolition debris, which accounts for 30% of all the state’s waste. The company has 10 facilities strategically located throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Collectively, the facilities recycle up to 90% of the materials they process—materials such as wood, concrete and metal. At that level, Sun Recycling is already a large contributor to the state’s goal to recycle 75% of the waste stream by 2020.
