CMRA—Taking a Stand for its Members

After a year of hearing from both the private sector and the public sector, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has decided to write new rules regarding biomass boiler fuel. These interrelated rules were the result of lawsuits the EPA lost against the Sierra Club and EarthJustice, and required the agency to look at fuels made from wastes in a stricter light. While the two main rules concerning boilers have since been stayed, the Secondary Materials, the one that most affects the manufacturers of waste fuels is still intact and harmful to companies such as those that make C&D biomass.

Two Year Goals to Meet

As I left C&D World, our annual meeting this year in Las Vegas, I could not stop thinking about how far the CMRA has come since I first was involved with the association. Seven years later, I am now its president and things have never looked better. The CMRA is in its best financial health, it has attracted a great group of directors to its board, its membership is growing, and it has become the leading voice for the entire C&D recycling industry.

Thanks for the Memories

As I write my last words on the Pres-ident’s Page of C&D World, I cannot help but reflect on where the Construction Materials Recycling Association is as an organization. Even though we have been through some tough economic times during my tenure as president, I am happy to say the CMRA is in its best financial shape since its inception in 1996. From a membership perspective, the CMRA continues to grow. The reason for this is simple: people from around the country believe in the CMRA and what it can do for any organization involved in the construction or demolition business. It will be very interesting to see how the CMRA grows over the next 15 years.
