C&D Recyclers Out Of LEED?

Do USGBC and its related Leadership in Environmen-tal and Energy Design (LEED) program want to continue to see construction and demolition materials recycled as part of green building, or at least anyone get any credits for doing it? Difficult to believe after reading the latest version of the proposed LEED 2012 recently out for comment.

Where We are on the EPA’s NHSM Rule

In the last issue of C&D World, Max Lee, Phd, from Koogler & Associates, wrote an excellent article that explained the then newly released Non Hazardous Secondary Materials (NHSM) rule from the EPA. The rule negatively affects the use of C&D wood biomass by putting an extra layer of regulation on the market. While a bit technical as to why, mostly it involves whether the fuel meets a vague legitimacy criteria outlined in the rule.

EPA Rule Puts Damper on Mixed C&D Recycling

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has done it again, adding a layer of un-needed federal bureaucracy that will only hurt C&D recycling. And those in the so-called environmental movement think it didn’t go far enough.

Estimating the Impact

While the recycling of C&D materials in modern times has been going on since the end of WWII, it has been in recent years the industry has really experienced tremendous growth. But how big is the industry? What is its economic impact? What are the environmental benefits it brings? There have been several back of the envelope guesses on these topics, but the Construction Materials Recycling Association is planning to do a comprehensive estimate of both of these sectors.
